Composite Fillings![]() Tooth Colored FillingsWhen we talk about a composite filling, we mean the tooth-colored fillings that are hardly noticeable to the naked eye. They are a combination of glass and plastic that is matched to the color of your tooth. It’s a great option for filling in after decay has damaged your tooth. However, composite filling materials can also be used to help improve the color of the surrounding teeth or even to help reshape a tooth with a minor disfigurement. Placing a Composite FillingTo get the composite filling ready, we have to prepare your tooth the same way as we had to in the past, by having you come into our Santa Clara, CA office, removing the decay from the tooth, and making sure the area to be filled was clean. From there, we apply layers of the composite material into your tooth, hardening it in place with a light between each layer. This allows it to become incredibly strong, and to get into all of the crevices on the inside of your tooth. Once all of the layers are completed, we then shape the composite filling to perfectly fit in the natural tooth, and then we polish the filling. This helps to prevent the filling from wearing out prematurely and prevents staining. The Pros and Cons of Composite FillingsThere are both good sides and bad sides to composite fillings, but typically, the bad sides are outweighed by the positives. Composite fillings are aesthetically pleasing, which is one of the biggest perks of getting them. They can be shaded to match your tooth, and they are very hard to notice. They are strong and supportive, helping to strengthen the remaining structure of your tooth. The first bad side of composite fillings is that some patients experience a little tooth sensitivity after the procedure is completed, but this nearly always goes away on its own in a short time. Plus, if you get a very large filling, they tend to wear out a little sooner. However, when you are getting a smaller filling, composites are just as durable as their metal counterparts.
